Our Services

PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE

Through our network of collaborators, Q’ul-lhanumutsun Aquatic Resources Society works together with our Member communities to lead projects or provide support on various science, conservation, and research projects. The projects below represent some of our various current and past projects.

Programs

ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINANTS STUDY

From 2014-2015, QARS conducted a study that measured the levels of carcinogenic Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins (PCDDs), and furans (PCDFs) in chinook salmon from Chemainus and Cowichan Rivers.

KENDRICK ISLE HABITAT ASSESSMENT

At the request of Lyackson First Nation, QARS conducted a habitat assessment of a portion of the waters surrounding Kendrick Isle with the help of Lyackson staff. Numerous fish, invertebrate, and algae species were documented.

PACIFIC HERRING REBUILDING

Pacific herring play a critical role in the health of our local marine ecosystem. Reduced spawning events coupled with increased Food and Bait fisheries quota led to our work on removal of commercial herring fisheries from portions of Hul’q’umi’num territory.

CHEMAINUS RIVER SALMON

QARS has worked to strengthen our understanding of Chinook and Chum Salmon within Chemainus River by forming relationships with DFO Stock Assessment to jointly carry out enumeration activities.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

QARS has hosted or taken part in several community events over the years including salmon prints at the Lake Cowichan Salmon Mushroom Festival and Cowichan River Days, interactive Build-a-Whale programs with Halalt Nation and Cowichan Tribes, scavenger hunts, and Hul’q’umi’num language workshops!
